New Rating System Ranks the Field in Division I
Winston-Salem, N.C. – The United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coach's Association (USTFCCCA) released their final standings for the 2018 Division I Cross Country Rating Index (CCRI) on Wednesday. The men's team finished the 2018 season with a final score of 841.19 and the women's team capped off the year with a score of 813.78. They ranked 31 (+3) of 318 and 43 (+1) of 350 in the CCRI, respectively.
The Demon Deacons recently competed at the Southeast Region Championship in Rock Hill, S.C. The women's fourth place finish was the program's best at the meet since a fourth-place finish in 2005. The men's fifth place finish was the best for the program since a third-place finish in 2001.
The CCRI is in its first year of use, having replaced the more familiar RPI. The index has adopted a similar method used in RPI for ranking things like strength of schedule and head-to-head performance. With the new system, other elements related to cross country have been added to the equation. Now, margin of victory and individual performance play a larger role in determining a total score.
The RPI was found to be rigid, using strict win-loss records from full-field team scores (e.g., finishing fifth in a 20-team meet yields a record of 15-4 for that meet). Calculations for season winning percentage and strength of schedule used that concept.
About the Cross Country Rating Index (CCRI)
The CCRI Team Rating is a one-to-one combination of a team's potential as measured against every team in the division plus results in "actual varsity contests" (AVC).
The index is rooted first on season-long individual performance of team members, paired with actual head-to-head team results, scored in a dual-meet fashion with added components of margin of victory or defeat. The scoring concepts in the mix include elements from the ELO ranking system used in rating chess players and from GolfStat, the NCAA's rating system for golf.
Only performances against NCAA Division I competition is included. All non-NCAA DI results are excluded from any analysis. For a competition to be considered intra-divisional for these purposes, there must have been at least one other finisher from more than one NCAA DI institution.
