Deacons Fall to Houston Baptist in Overtime

11/23/2018 4:51:00 PM | Men's Basketball

Brandon Childress scored 27 points and Jaylen Hoard added 22 in the overtime loss.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Despite career-high games from junior Brandon Childress and freshman Jaylen Hoard, Wake Forest men's basketball dropped to Houston Baptist 93-91 in overtime on Friday afternoon.

Childress scored 27 points, going 7-13 from the field, 4-8 from behind the arch and 9-10 from the free throw line. Hoard continued his streak of double-digit scoring, adding 22 points and a career-high 15 boards. The freshman has scored in double digits in every game for the Deacons so far this season.

The last time Wake Forest had two players with 20 or more points was last season when Bryant Crawford recorded 29 and Doral Moore scored 23 against NC State on Feb. 17.

The Deacons opened the game on a 6-0 run and held the Huskies to just 1-9 (11 percent) from the field before the first media timeout. Wake Forest continued the offensive attack taking a 11-3 lead with over 12 minutes remaining in the first half.

Houston Baptist pulled within four at 21-17 behind a couple of three pointers from Jalon Gates to get the momentum rolling for the Huskies. A triple from Torry Johnson on the other end gave the Deacons a 31-27 advantage, but the Huskies answered back with an And-1 to cut Wake's lead to one.

The Demon Deacons' points were scattered across the board in the opening half as Jaylen Hoard led with 12 points and five rebounds followed by Chaundee Brown and Sharone Wright, Jr. each with five as Wake Forest held on to a 39-25 lead at halftime.

The Deacons were on fire to start the second half as they shot 9-9 from the field and 4-4 from three with two from Childress in the opening minutes of the second frame. Houston Baptist rallied back and went on a 6-0 run to pull within five.

Wake Forest took their largest lead of the game, 71-57, with just under nine minutes remaining, but a five minute scoring drought for the Deacons put the Huskies within four following an 11-1 run, forcing Wake Forest to call a timeout with 3:46 remaining in the game. Houston Baptist continued to pressure the Deacs, making it a one-possession game with 26 seconds to play.

Up by one, Childress converted to a couple of free throws to give the Deacons an 83-80 lead with 10 seconds remaining. The Huskies answered with a three at the other end to tie the game, leaving just .5 seconds on the clock, forcing overtime.

Houston Baptist trailed the entire regulation, but took its first lead in overtime. Wake Forest went back on top momentarily, but the Huskies took a 92-91 lead with 24 seconds remaining in overtime. The Huskies capped the game going 1-2 on free throws, but its 93-91 lead was just enough as time expired in favor of Houston Baptist.

Wake Forest returns to action on Tuesday, Nov. 27 against Western Carolina. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
