Junior Brandon Childress led the team with 20 points in the win.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.- Wake Forest men's basketball made late stops to overcome Western Carolina, 71-64 on Tuesday night at the LJVM Coliseum. Junior Brandon Childress notched a team-best 20 points, his second consecutive 20-point game this season.

Freshman Jaylen Hoard tallied 17 points to improve his streak of double-digit scoring to six games, and Chaundee Brown contributed a season-high 14 points.

Wake Forest (4-2) jumped out to an explosive 21-3 lead highlighted by an early triple from Brown and And-1 conversions from Childress and Hoard. Brown set the offensive tempo out of gate and reached double-digit scoring with a team-high 11 points in the first half.

The Deacs strung together a season-best 12-0 run and took a 21-6 lead with 11 minutes remaining in the opening half. However, Western Carolina hit its stride with a 14-2 run to pull the Catamounts within six and cut Wake Forest's lead to 23-17 with under eight to play in the opening frame.

Wake Forest went nearly three minutes without a basket and Western Carolina capitalized. The Catamounts shifted the momentum ending the half with a buzzer beater three to force a one possession game as the Deacs held on to a 33-31 lead at the break.

Western Carolina used the momentum from the first half to put pressure on the Deacons on both sides of the ball. The Catamounts took their first lead of the game with 13 minutes remaining with a three, but Wake answered back to regain control with layups from Childress and Ikenna Smart.

Western Carolina continued to threaten. The Deacs battled and took a nine-point lead, but back-to-back threes for the Catamounts cut Wake's advantage to three with just under five minutes to play.

Coming down to the wire, the Deacon defense made timely plays in the final minutes of action to seal the victory. Western Carolina committed three turnovers within a 30 second span to set up an offensive advantage for Wake Forest.

Freshman Isaiah Mucius pulled down a timely offensive rebound and followed with a layup to put the Deacs up three with under a minute to play. Wake held Western Carolina without a field goal for the final three minutes of action. Two free throws from Hoard followed by a steal from Mucius with a foul on the shot put the Deacs in a winning position.

Up next, Wake Forest will travel to Richmond, Va., to face the Spiders on Saturday, Dec. 1. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m. and will be broadcast on NBCSN.
