Men’s Basketball Drops Road Contest to Richmond

RICHMOND, VA. - The Deacs faced Richmond in their first true road test of the season and fell to the Spiders 84-74 at the Robins Center. Brandon Childress and freshman Isaiah Mucius led the scoring efforts for the Deacons with 17 points each, a career-mark for Mucius. Mucius also collected a career-high seven rebounds.
Wake Forest (4-3) opened the game with a three from Jaylen Hoard, but Richmond soon jumped out to a 12-6 lead. Hoard continued to propel the Deacs with a dunk to even the game at 17-17, but the Spiders regained momentum with a couple of threes on the other end.
Richmond's (3-5) lead was amplified with a 7-0 run, but the Deacons answered back with a 6-0 run of their own highlighted by an And-1 from Chaundee Brown to cut the Spiders' lead to three with just over six minutes remaining in the opening half.
Brandon Childress capped the first half with a layup, his first points of the game, as the Spiders held on to a one point lead at the break. Wake Forest outrebounded Richmond 18-11 in the first half.
The Deacs regained the lead with back-to-back buckets from Olivier Sarr, followed by a layup from Childress off the steal from Torry Johnson out of the break.
Richmond responded with an 11-0 run to take a 51-43 lead with 14 minutes to play. After shooting just 18 percent from behind the arch in the first half, Richmond hit four from three in the second frame, sparked by Noah Yates and Grant Golden.
The offensive momentum continued for Richmond as the Spiders took a 10 point lead with just two minutes remaining. After scoring just two points in the first half, Childress stepped up to drop 15 and lead the team in the game.
Turnovers plagued the Deacons as Richmond scored 26 points off 14 Wake turnovers.
Wake Forest returns to LJVM for a two-game home slate as it welcomes Charlotte and Davidson in non-conference action on Dec. 6 and Dec. 10, respectively. Tip-off against the 49ers is set for 7 p.m.
