WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -
The Wake Forest women's basketball team battled for a 60-53 victory over Towson Tuesday (Nov. 6) night inside the LJVM Colliseum. The win marked the Deacs' fifth-straight season opening win and 11th-straight opening win at home.

Sophomore forward Ivana Raca led all players with a career-high 22 points and 10 rebounds. Raca shot 8-for-11 from the field and recorded the first double-double of her career. Sophomore guard Gina Conti finished with 13 points, three rebounds and three assists. Junior forward Ona Udoh notched 10 points and six rebounds to pace the Wake Forest attack.

The Demon Deacons (1-0) got off to a hot start, orchestrating a 10-0 run to stun the Tigers (0-1) right out the gate. Raca set the tone early for the Deacs with six first quarter points. Towson refused to let the game get out of hand early, going on a 6-0 run to close out the quarter trailing 16-12.

In the second quarter Wake Forest kept up the pace, going on a 9-0 run which was capped off by a transition three by Raca. The Deacs took advantage of the Tigers 0-for-7 cold streak with five minutes left in the half. The quarter belonged to the sophomore forward, as Raca was on fire, shooting a perfect 7-for-7 from the field.

With two minutes to go, Towson allowed seven straight points by the Deacs. Wake Forest took advantage of mistakes, scoring 14 points off turnovers and took a 38-24 lead into the break.

Both teams struggled to build momentum in the third quarter, shooting a combined 2-for-20 from the field through the final five minutes. The Demon Deacons held on to a 45-36 lead heading into the final period.

The Tigers continued to add pressure on the perimeter and inched within four with seven minutes to play in the fourth. Conti's ball control helped Wake Forest stay in front with an old-fashioned three-point play on a driving layup in the lane.

In the final minutes, Towson turned it up and their full-court pressure was effective. Two steals and four quick points gave the Tigers momentum and with 31 seconds to play, the Deacs' lead shrunk to four at 57-53. After a few failed attempts in the closing seconds, Wake Forest put the game out of reach with made free throws from Raca to earn the 60-53 victory.

Up next, The Demon Deacons have a quick turnaround and host Mercer on Friday, November 9that 7 p.m.
