Jaylen Hoard and Brandon Childress led the team with 16 points in the win.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - An explosive first half propelled Wake Forest (6-3) over Davidson (8-3) 67-63 on Monday night (Dec. 17) at the LJVM Coliseum.

Freshman Jaylen Hoard and junior Brandon Childress led the Deacons with 16 points, while Chaundee Brown grabbed a team and season-high eight boards. Hoard has scored in double figures in all nine games this season. Graduate transfers Ikenna Smart and Torry Johnson each had career nights as Smart pulled down six rebounds and Johnson scored 10 points in the win.

Wake Forest came out of the gate hot, taking a 13-5 advantage in the first four minutes of action. Hoard scored the first five points for the Deacons and kept the momentum rolling early with a block on the other end.

It was raining threes in the LJVM in the opening frame as the Deacons hit 7-of-10 from behind the arch (70 percent), led by Childress who went 3-for-4 from three. Childress and Hoard led the offensive charge each posting double figure points in the first half with 11 and 10, respectively.

The Wildcats answered with a three on the other end to cut Wake's lead to five, but Brown got in on the three-point action, hitting a dagger as the Deacons regained control with a 21-13 advantage. Defense made big stops and another triple from Childress gave Wake Forest its largest lead of the game at 27-13.

Davidson responded with three straight field goals, but Wake Forest continued the impressive offensive campaign, closing the first half with a 33-24 lead.

The Wake Forest offense momentarily stalled in the second half and the Wildcats took advantage going on a 6-0 run before an And-1 from Torry Johnson put the Deacs back in charge. The three-point play from Johnson, a pair of free throws from Childress and a jumper from Smart put the Deacons back on top by 10, 40-30.

The Wildcats chipped away at Wake's lead, but a big 6-0 run with under five minutes remaining gave Wake Forest a 56-49 lead. Back-to-back jumpers from Hoard followed by a layup from Smart sparked the offense for the final three minutes of action. Johnson converted his second And-1 of the contest, as Wake Forest took a 59-51 advantage with 2:27 remaining.

Davidson battled back to keep the game close hitting its final four shots, but Wake Forest never relinquished the lead after initially falling 3-2 to open the game.

The Deacons finished the game shooting 47 percent from the field, as well as 47 percent from three.

Up next, Wake Forest will hit the road to face No. 2 Tennessee on Saturday, Dec 22 at noon before a seven-day holiday break.
