PALM CITY, Fla. – The Wake Forest men's golf team opened play Sunday with the first round of the Valspar Collegiate at The Floridian. The Demon Deacons are in third place at 1-under after the opening 18 holes, led by Parker Gillam, who holds the individual lead at 5-under.
"We played very well today on a very difficult course," said head coach Jerry Haas. "I'm very proud of Parker. For a freshman to come out here and play that well is outstanding. This will be a tough week it gets windy, which is the forecast. We got off to a great start and I'm proud of the way they played coming off a disappointing tournament last time."
The No. 22 Demon Deacons, the tournament's defending champion, shot a 1-under 283 on Sunday. They only trail the top two teams in the nation as No. 1 Oklahoma State shot 7-under and No. 2 Texas A&M shot 3-under.
Gillam had six birdies and just one bogey to tie a career-low 66 to take a 1-shot lead into the second round on the individual leaderboard.
Lee Detmer and Eric Bae each shot even par 71 to finish the day T-15th place. Paul McBride had a 4-over 75 to round out the scoring four for the Demon Deacons, while Marco Steyn had a 5-over 76.
The Valspar Collegiate continues Monday and concludes Tuesday at The Floridian.
