EUGENE, Ore. - Sam Halvorsen earned Second Team All-America honors after finishing 16th in the 10,000m run Thursday night at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship.
Halvorsen ran a career-best time of 33:52.69, putting her fourth on the Wake Forest all-time performers list. Entering Thursday's competition, her best was 34:10.85 set at the NCAA East Preliminary in May.
She is the first Wake Forest NCAA qualifier and All-American in the women's 10k since Annie Bersagel in 2005. Her time was also the fastest by a Demon Deacon since Michelle Sikes set the school record of 32:58.20 in 2007.
Halvorsen competed in a tough field of 24 runners, as the top-five finishers all broke the previous meet record of 32:28.57 set in 1988. Sharon Lokedi of Kansas won the event with a time of 32:09.20.
Halvorsen qualified for the championships after finishing seventh in a field of 48 runners at the NCAA East Preliminary on May 24. She ran a then-personal-best 34:10.85 in the 10000m run, which was sixth on the Wake Forest all-time performers list.
Up next, Robert Heppenstall will compete in the men's 800m final on Friday at 9:44 p.m. ET.
