The Matchup
• No. 5-ranked Wake Forest opens the 2018 regular season with a pair of games at Spry Stadium. The Deacs kick off the season with No. 2 Indiana on Friday at 7:30 p.m., followed by a Sunday game against ETSU at 7 p.m., and both games will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra.
• Friday nights at Spry Stadium are presented by Alarm South. Alarm South is the official security partner of Wake Forest Athletics.
Last Time Out
• Wake Forest closed out the exhibition schedule with a 2-0 victory over Patriot League-favorite Loyola Maryland.
• Brad Dunwell scored the opening goal in the first half, while Omir Fernandez added a penalty kick goal in the second half. Three different Deacons combined for the shutout in between the posts.
Quick Kicks
• Wake Forest was ranked No. 5 in the nation in the United Soccer Coaches preseason poll. The Deacs have been ranked in the top five in 21 consecutive polls dating back to the middle of the 2016 season - eight more weeks than any other program.
• The Deacs were picked to repeat as the ACC Atlantic Division champion in the ACC preseason poll. North Carolina is projected to win the Coastal Division and overall title.
• Wake Forest will have a lot of new faces after sending seven into the MLS ranks following the 2017 season. Still, the Deacs brought in the No. 2 recruiting class in the country, headlined by top-50 recruits Isaiah Parente, Kyle Holcomb, Koby Carr and Aristotle Zarris.
• Since the start of the Bobby Muuss era in 2015, Wake Forest has a 55-8-7 overall record. That win total is the most of any Division I program.
• Per usual, the Deacons play a tough ACC slate, which includes four games against preseason top-15 teams in No. 11 Clemson, No. 10 Duke, No. 15 Virginia and No. 6 Louisville.
Scouting The Opponents
• Indiana finished as the national runner-up a season ago, falling by a 1-0 margin to Stanford in the title game. The Hoosiers return nine starters from that team, including MAC Hermann Trophy watch list honoree Andrew Gutman, a senior defender. Trey Muse is a returning All-American keeper, coming off a 17-0-6 record with 17 shutouts, a 0.24 GAA and .906 save percentage last year.
• The Bucs went 9-2-7 a season ago, and went unbeaten over their last 11 games, falling in their conference tournament in penaltiy kicks. ETSU has a new head coach in David Casper, who was previously an assistant at Kentucky.
Up Next
• Wake Forest hits the road for the first time this season, traveling to Florida Gulf Coast on Sept. 1.
