Volleyball Gameday: Wake Forest Opens Season with Spartan-Demon Deacon Classic

THE MATCHUP
• Wake Forest opens the season as it hosts the Spartan-Demon Deacon Classic Friday and Saturday, Aug. 24 and 25. The Deacons will face Maryland on Friday at 5:30 p.m., Air Force on Saturday at 11 a.m. and close the tournament against UNCG at 7:30 p.m.
• All three games will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra with Brian Rushing on the call.
LAST TIME OUT
• The Demon Deacons finished last season with a 13-19 overall record and went 5-14 in the ACC.
• Conference play was highlighted by home wins over Duke (Nov. 8) and North Carolina (Nov. 22). It marked the first time since 2008 that Wake Forest defeated Duke and North Carolina in the same season.
QUICK HITS
• Head Coach Bill Ferguson returns for his third season at the helm of the program.
• The Demon Deacons return 14 players from last year's squad, led by seniors Hailey Brooke McFadden and Katie Moore, and welcome five freshmen to the club.
• Junior Caroline Rassenfoss is the team's returning kill leader as she tallied 271 kills last season.
• 2018 will mark the first season for Wake Forest Volleyball in the newly renovated Reynolds Gymnasium. Reynolds has been home for the Deacons since 1971. the team spent the previous two seasons in the LJVM Coliseum while th renovations were underway.
SCOUTING THE TERRAPINS
• Adam Hughes enters his first season as head coach of the Terps. He previously served a an assistant for the past four seasons.
• Maryland finished the 2017 season with a 18-14 record and a 7-13 mark in Big Ten competition.
• Seniors outside hitter Liz Twilley and defensive specialist Abigail Bentz lead the way, while the Terrapins added five new pieces to the program with three freshmen and two transfers.
SCOUTING THE FALCONS
• Air Force makes the trip to North Carolina facing all of its opponentd this weekend for the first time.
• Last season, the Falcons compiled a 14-18 overall record.
• 13 letterwinners return to the court for the Falcons, while the squad adds six newcomers.
• Both Denise Ssozi and Abigail Miksch return for their junior and senior seasons, respectively, after leading the team in kills last season (395).
SCOUTING THE SPARTANS
• UNCG are coming off a 19-12 season and 11-5 in SoCon play. and return all but four players from last year's team.
• Senior Allison Penner, a 2017 First Team All-SoCon selection leads the team alongside sophomore outside Holly Behrends who posted 258 kills last season.
LOOKING AHEAD
•The Demon Deacons will continue tournament play as they travel to Nebraska to face Santa Clara, Ohio and the 2017 National Champion Huskers
