Volleyball Concludes Spartan-Demon Deacon Classic

Wake Forest volleyball (0-3) wrapped its first weekend of play at the Spartan-Demon Deacon Classic on Saturday at Reynolds Gymnasium. The Deacs faced a pair of tough opponents in the final day of the tournament, falling to Air Force (2-1) and UNCG (2-1).
Match one: Air Force 3, Wake Forest 1
After taking an initial 1-0 lead against Air Force, Wake Forest eventually fell in four sets to the Falcons. Senior Katie Moore posted double-digit kills, tallying 10 in 22 attempts (.318), while Caroline Rassenfoss and Caitlyn Della each added eight kills.
The Deacons started the morning off with a first set 25-21 win over the Falcons, but Air Force found its groove to win three consecutive sets to win the match. A four-point run late in the first set allowed the Deacons to lead by one, and another three-point run clinched the first the 1-0 lead for Wake.
The Deacons were able to get in front of the Falcons early in set two, but Air force took advantage of a six-point run to tie the match with a 25-22 victory in the second frame. The momentum stayed on the Falcons' side of the court as they walked away with the win after posting 25-22 and 25-20 victories in sets three and four.
Air Force totaled 55 kills, a dozen more than the Deacons' 43 and posted a hitting percentage of .275 against Wake Forest's .187. However, the Deacons won the block battle with seven total blocks, while the Falcons only recorded three.
Match two: UNCG 3, Wake Forest 1
The debut tournament came to an end as UNCG took home a 3-1 victory over the Deacons. This time it was Caroline Kuhn who recorded a team-high 12 kills, the most of any Deacon in a match this season. Madeline Holt continued to set-up plays from her teammates, tallying 38 assists in the match.
Down a set, the Deacons battled in the second frame, but their rally came up short as the Spartans took a 2-0 lead in the match with a 27-25 win. Wake Forest stormed back with a 25-20 win in the third set, cutting UNCG's lead to one, however, the Spartans sealed the victory, defeating the Deacons 25-20 in the final set of the night.
Junior middle blocker Caitlyn Della was named to the All-Tournament team after recording 24 kills in the Spartan-Demon Deacon Classic.
The Deacs will continue tournament play as they head to Lincoln, Neb., to take on the reigning national champion Huskers as well as Santa Clara and Ohio, Aug. 31-Sept. 1.
