Quarterback Sam Hartman threw for two touchdowns in the loss

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Boston College outlasted a Wake Forest rally as the Demon Deacons fell 41-34 on Thursday night at BB&T Field.
 
Wake Forest (2-1, 0-1 ACC) and Boston College (3-0, 1-0 ACC) each had over 500 yards of offense in a back-and-forth contest that saw the Eagles pull away in the fourth quarter.
 
Quarterback Sam Hartman was 20-for-45 with 214 yards and two touchdowns. Cade Carney and Matt Colburn each rushed for over 100 yards while Colburn recorded a first-half touchdown. Cameron Glenn led the Deacons with 10 total tackles, three solo stops and one pass breakup.
 
Boston College struck first on its beginning drive of the game. AJ Dillon sprinted 45-yards as the Eagles took the early 7-0 lead.
 
With under five minutes left in the first quarter, Colburn punched in a 2-yard touchdown to tie the game up. Prior to the score, Wake Forest benefitted from a fumble recovery by Cade Carney on a punt, putting the Deacons on the BC 13-yard line. After an 11-yard rush from Hartman, Colburn powered his way into the end zone.
 
BC reclaimed the lead early in the second quarter after a 27-yard touchdown pass to Jeff Smith.
 
Later in the frame, Demetrius Kemp blocked a Boston College punt which was recovered in the end zone by Malik Grate as the Deacons tied the game up at 14-14.
 
Wake Forest took its first lead of the game in the waning minutes of the first half as Surratt scored his first-career touchdown on a five-yard pass from Hartman. During the drive, Hartman had a 26-yard completion to Steven Claude and a 32-yard pass with Surratt.
 
Under two minutes later, Boston College knotted the score at 21-21 following a 35-yard touchdown catch by Kobay White.
 
The Deacons scored on their first drive of the third quarter with a 27-yard field goal from Nick Sciba making it 24-21. BC responded with a 29-yard touchdown pass to Tommy Sweeney as the Eagles took a 28-24 lead.
 
Boston College extended its lead to 34-24 in the fourth quarter after a 71-yard touchdown pass to Smith.
 
Sciba kicked a 23-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter as Wake Forest pulled within seven however a BC 40-yard touchdown pass to Ben Glines soon gave the Eagles a 41-27 lead.  
 
Wake Forest rallied late with a 5-yard touchdown pass to tight end Jack Freudenthal as the Deacs came within a touchdown with 1:33 left in the contest. Boston College recovered the onside kick from Wake Forest to seal the victory.
 
The 500 Club
  • Wake Forest recorded over 500-yards of offense for the fourth game in a row, dating back to the 2017 season.
  • It is the first time that the Deacons have had 500 or more yards of offense in four-straight games.
Block Out
  • Wake Forest blocked a BC punt in the second quarter as Kemp got a hand on it followed by a touchdown recovery. It was the first blocked punt for the Demon Deacons since the opener in 2014 against ULM which was Dave Clawson's first game as coach for Wake Forest. The touchdown that night was recovered by future-NFLer Kevin Johnson.
Balanced Rushing Attack
  • Wake Forest had nearly 300 yards of rushing with 117 yards from Matt Colburn, 116 yards from Cade Carney and 65 yards from quarterback Sam Hartman.
  • It was the second consecutive game that Carney went over 100 yards and the fourth time in his career.
  • Colburn went over 100-yards rushing for the seventh time in his career and the first time in 2018.
Maggio Makes Waves
  • Punter Dom Maggio had a season-long punt of 54 yards in the first quarter which rolled out of bounds at the BC 1-yard line. Earlier in the quarter, the Eagles botched the return of a Maggio punt that the Deacons recovered deep in BC territory.
Fourth-Down Efficiency
  • Wake Forest is 7-for-8 on fourth downs this year and went 6-for-7 on fourth downs against Boston College.
