LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Wake Forest men's golf team had a strong conclusion to the Louisville Cardinal Challenge to post a third place finish at 13-under par. The Demon Deacons had the low round of the day at the UofL Golf Club, shooting a 7-under 277 to move up two places on the leaderboard during the final round.
Duke won the title by shooting 37-under over the three rounds. Host Louisville was the runner-up at 20-under, followed by the Demon Deacons at 13-under.
"Today's round was a nice birthday present," said head coach Jerry Haas, who turned 55 on Sunday. "No one shot over par today. I am very proud of the bounce back after yesterday's performance."
The Demon Deacons had a consistent team effort during the final round. Cameron Young, Eric Bae and Lee Detmer each shot a 2-under 69 to tie for low Deac honors. Bae finished the tournament at 2-under, while Young and Detmer each finished at 1-under.
Marco Steyn and Eugenio Chacarra each shot a 1-under 70 to complete the lineup for Wake Forest. Steyn finished at 3-under for the tournament, while Chacarra was 2-over in his collegiate debut.
Freshman Alex Fitzpatrick, playing as an individual, shot even par 71 to conclude his first collegiate event in fourth place at 7-under par.
Wake Forest will return to action Sept. 24-25 as it hosts the inaugural Old Town Club Collegiate Invitational.
