WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Wake Forest men's golf team had a strong opening day of the inaugural Old Town Club Collegiate Invitational on Monday. The Demon Deacons shot 23-under over the first two rounds of their home tournament to take a four-shot lead into Tuesday's final round.
The Demon Deacons posted a 10-under 270 in the first round before shooting a 13-under 267 in the second round. Wake Forest leads second place Louisville (19-under) by four shots and third place Yale (10-under) by 13 shots with one round to play.
The tournament is Wake Forest's first regular season tournament at Old Town Club, the program's longtime home course. The last collegiate tournament at the club was the 1962 ACC Championship.
"The long-anticipated chance to host a tournament at Old Town became reality today and it was an incredible day," said head coach Jerry Haas. "I can't thank Old Town Club enough for letting us enjoy this fabulous course. There was a great crowd out there and I know our players enjoyed playing in that environment. It was a nice day for the Deacs, but we will have to play hard tomorrow with Louisville right on our tail. Nine of our 10 guys shot par or better today and that is a good testament to the depth of this squad. We look forward to tomorrow."
Eric Bae shot back-to-back rounds of 64 on the par 70 course to hold the 36-hole individual lead at 12-under. Marco Steyn is in third place at 9-under par after rounds of 66 and 65. Cameron Young and Lee Detmer are both 1-under after two rounds while Alex Fitzpatrick is at even par.
Five additional Demon Deacons are playing the tournament as individuals, led by Eugenio Chacarra, who is in fifth place at 7-under. Kengo Aoshima is also in the top 10, finishing the day T-8th at 4-under par.
The final round of the Old Town Club Collegiate Invitational is scheduled for Tuesday with tee times starting at 7:30 a.m. Admission is free.
