WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Wake Forest men's golf team finished second at the inaugural Old Town Club Collegiate Invitational. The Demon Deacons shot 6-under during Tuesday's final round to finish at 29-under as they were edged by Louisville (30-under) by one stroke.
The tournament was Wake Forest's first regular season tournament at Old Town Club, the program's longtime home course. The last collegiate tournament at the club was the 1962 ACC Championship.
"It is always tough to host an event and lose by a shot," said head coach Jerry Haas. "We are trying to give our student-athletes the best possible competition to test ourselves and hats off to Louisville for shooting the low-round of the day and clipping us by one shot. It was back-and-forth towards the end and that type of competition is how you grow as a team. In team golf, when you lose by a shot, every player can think of 10 wasted shots over the course of the tournament, but you hang in there as a team and rally around each other. I want to thank Old Town for letting us play this tournament and hopefully this is the start of a great tradition. We look forward to having another great 12-team field for next year's tournament."
Three Demon Deacons finished in the top four of the individual leaderboard. Eric Bae was the individual runner-up at 15-under, posting a final round 67. Eugenio Chacarra, playing as an individual, shot a Wake Forest freshman record 63 in the final round to finish in third place at 14-under. Marco Steyn finished in fourth place at 10-under after a final round 69.
Redshirt freshman Kengo Aoshima, also playing as an individual, finished in the top 10 in his collegiate debut, posting a score of 6-under to finish T-8th. Of the 10 Demon Deacons competing in the event, either in the lineup or as individuals, seven finished the tournament under par. Cameron Young finished at 3-under, Parker Gillam was 2-under and Lee Detmer was 1-under.
Wake Forest will return to action Sunday with the start of the Nike Golf Collegiate Invitational at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas.
