Wake Forest one shot off the lead after 18 holes at Colonial Country Club

FORT WORTH, Texas – The Wake Forest men's golf team opened play at the Nike Golf Collegiate Invitational with a strong first round at Colonial Country Club. The Demon Deacons shot 2-over and finished the opening day tied for second place, one shot off the lead.
Vanderbilt shot 1-over to hold the first-round lead at the event which annually has one of the strongest fields of the fall schedule. Wake Forest and Clemson are tied for second at 2-over, one shot behind the Commodores.
"This is a course you must respect," said head coach Jerry Haas. "The rough is extremely high and luckily the greens are soft or else our scores would have been higher. I am very proud of this group as everyone was able to grind it out. Each player played their last four holes very well and when you do that, you move up the leaderboard. We have such a deep team that I feel like we can compete with anyone in the country. It will be another good test tomorrow playing with Vanderbilt and Clemson, who I consider two of the best teams in the country."
Eric Bae led the Deacs during the first round, shooting a 3-under 67 to finish the day second on the individual leaderboard. He is one shot off the lead and was one of just seven players in the field of 75 to shoot under par on Sunday.
Kengo Aoshima shot an even par 70 to finish the round T-8th. Cameron Young was 2-over and Marco Steyn was 3-over to round out the scoring four for the Demon Deacons, while Eugenio Chacarra had an opening round 77.
The Nike Golf Collegiate Invitational will continue Monday and conclude Tuesday at Colonial Country Club.
