Deacs Finish Seventh at Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown

BOSTON, Mass. – The Wake Forest women's cross country team finished seventh in the Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown Friday afternoon at Franklin Park.
As a team, the Demon Deacons finished seventh in a field of 24 teams with a total of 200 points. The team beat out two ranked opponents in No. 11 Providence (11th) and No. 22 Syracuse (9th) and had the second-highest finish of any of the seven ACC schools competing.
Ole Miss took the title with a team total of 102 points while Georgia Tech, Utah, No. 24 Minnesota and No. 27 Dartmouth rounded out the top five.
Samantha Halvorsen paced the Demon Deacons in the 5k with an eighth-place finish in a field of 216 runners. She crossed the line with a time of 17:27 while Mimi Smith finished right after Halvorsen in ninth with a time of 17:34.
In third for the Deacons was freshman Elise Wright, competing in her first collegiate cross country meet. She finished with a time of 17:59 while sophomore Anna Campbell finished with a time of 18:15.
Graduate student Johanna Schulz, competing for the first time in a Wake Forest uniform, crossed with a time of 18:30 and freshman Zoe Clay rounded out the competition for the Deacs in her debut with a time of 19:11.
Up next, the men will head to the Paul Short Run in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania on Sept. 29. The teams will then compete in the Winthrop adidas Invitational on Oct. 5 in Rock Hill, South Carolina. That meet was rescheduled from Sept. 15 due to Hurricane Florence.
