Deacs Drop 1-0 Decision to Notre Dame

Nonie Frishette recorded five saves in the loss
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Wake Forest women's soccer team fell to Notre Dame, 1-0, Sunday afternoon at Spry Stadium.
The Fighting Irish improved to 5-5-0 with a 1-1-0 record in the ACC while the Demon Deacons dropped to 5-3-1 with a 1-1-0 ledger in conference play.
The Deacs took an early 4-2 advantage in shots, led by Hannah Betfort with two attempts on goal in the 13th and 16th minutes.
After a long, physical defensive battle, Notre Dame had a strong offensive attack in 39th and 40th minutes that resulted in three blocked shots by the Wake Forest defense. The Irish tried to strike again as time expired with a header in the 44th minute and a shot in the 45th minute, but Nonie Frishette was there for the save on both.
Frishette finished Sunday's match with five saves, all of which were in the first half.
Estelle Laurier took the first shot of the second half in the 53rd minute but the Notre Dame keeper made one of her five saves of the match to keep the game scoreless.
It was Notre Dame's Brooke VanDyck that scored the game-winning goal in the 68th minute. Jen Westendorf crossed the ball in from the far-right side, allowing VanDyck the one-timer and the goal.
The Irish almost doubled their lead in the 75th minute, but the scorer was ruled offside.
Ryanne Brown nearly had the equalizer in the 88th minute when Laurier sent a cross inside the box. Brown fired a shot point-blank at the Irish keeper, who was able to make the stop.
The Irish finished with a 10-8 advantage in shots and a 6-5 edge in shots on goal. Laurier and Betfort led the squad with two shots each while Brown, Peyton Perea, Madison Hammond and Hulda Arnarsdottir had attempts as well.
Up next, the Demon Deacons stay at Spry Stadium to face Boston College on Sept. 27 at 7 p.m.
