Wake Forest nearly erased a 14-point second-half deficit against the Eagles, ultimately falling by one point
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Trailing by 14 points in the second half, the Wake Forest women's basketball team's late rally came up just short as the Deacs dropped a 65-64 decision to Boston College Thursday (Jan. 10) evening inside the LJVM Coliseum.
Elisa Penna responded from an off night of shooting last time out to the tune of a game-high and season-high 26 points and a team-high eight rebounds. The senior was a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line, tying for the fifth-most free throws made without a miss in program history.
Freshman Kaylen Dickson made her first career-start while fellow freshman Lindsey Jarosinski came off the bench for the best game of her young Wake Forest (9-6, 0-2 ACC) career. Jarosinski played a career-high 11 minutes, finishing with four points, two rebounds, two steals, one block and one assist while finishing as a +12 in production.
Tied after the opening quarter, Boston College (12-4, 1-2 ACC) took an eight-point lead into the halftime break before building its biggest lead of the game at 14 midway through the third quarter. The Demon Deacons responded, however, going on an extended 19-6 over 6:26 of game action to pull within one of the visiting Eagles.
Penna scored 13 of her 26 points during the run while Jarosinski added all four of her points. Raegyn Branch connected on a pair from the free throw line to cap the scoring during the run. As a team, the Deacs were 19-of-21 from the charity stripe compared to Boston College's 3-of-4 effort from the line.
On three occasions in the fourth quarter the Deacs would get within a point of the Eagles. Penna connected on a pair of free throws with 2:11 remaining to get the Deacs within one for the final time at 65-64. Wake Forest would get two final looks in the closing minutes but were unable to capitalize on either attempt as the 65-64 advantage for Boston College would hold until the final buzzer.
The Demon Deacons hit the road for the first time in ACC play on Sunday, January 13, traveling to South Bend, Indiana to take on top-ranked Notre Dame. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. on ACC Network Extra.
