No. 3 Virginia Defeats Wake Forest, 68-45

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. – Wake Forest (8-10, 1-5 ACC) suffered a 68-45 loss at the hands of No. 3 Virginia on Tuesday night.

Junior Brandon Childress led the Deacons with 12 points and six boards and Olivier Sarr added 11 points and eight rebounds.

Virginia (17-1, 5-1 ACC) opened the game on a 10-0 run, forcing the Deacs to burn an early timeout. Childress got Wake Forest on the board with a three, but Virginia's offense exploded to take a 17-3 lead at the first media timeout.

Childress continued to step up for the Deacons, slowly chipping away at the Cavs' lead, pacing the Deacs with 11 points, five rebounds and two assists in the first half. Wake Forest finished the frame hitting five of its last seven, while holding Virginia 0-of-4 from the field. However the Cavaliers took a 36-23 advantage into the locker room at the half.

Wake Forest tacked on a few points to start the second half, but Virginia continued to find open looks for a 7-0 run to take a 53-31 lead with just under 13 minutes remaining in the game. After scoring just two points in the first half, Olivier Sarr tallied six in the first seven minutes of the second frame and hit a three with 9:51 on the clock.

The Wake Forest defense held the Hoos without a basket for over six minutes as the Cavaliers went 0-of-9 from the field. Despite another scoring drought from the Cavaliers late in the game, Virginia held on to a 68-45 lead to finish the contest.

Wake Forest held Virginia to just 39 percent shooting. Entering tonight's game, Virginia was shooting 48 percent from the field.

The Deacons return home on Saturday, Jan. 26 against Boston College. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. on RSN.
