Ivana Raca led the team in scoring for the fourth consecutive game
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Wake Forest women's basketball team battled No. 7 NC State to the wire Thursday (Jan. 31) evening, dropping a 59-50 decision inside the LJVM Coliseum.
Ivana Raca led the Demon Deacons (10-11, 1-7 ACC) in scoring for the fourth consecutive game, scoring a team-high 17 points. Gina Conti finished with 15 points while Ona Udoh had a team-best eight rebounds. The Deacs outrebounded NC State, who entered the game fourth nationally in rebounding margin (+12.7), by five Thursday night.
After trailing by nine points following the first quarter of play, the Demon Deacons (10-11, 1-7 ACC) played the Wolfpack (21-0, 8-0 ACC) evenly over the final three quarters of play, posting identical 39-all score lines.
The two sides traded baskets throughout much of the first half, with NC State slowly building a double-digit lead early in the second quarter. A quick 5-1 run by the Demon Deacons to open the third quarter pulled the hosts back within single digits of NC State, the only undefeated Division I men's or women's basketball team in the country. Udoh opened the half with a jumper in the lane and Dickson followed a Wolfpack free throw with a three-pointer, making the score 31-22.
As NC State grew its lead to 15, its largest in the game, midway through the third, Wake Forest once again responded with a run of their own. The Deacs used an 8-2 run, with four of the eight points coming from Conti, to make it a nine-point game late in the third.
Wake Forest would trim the deficit to seven on three separate occasions in the fourth quarter, but NC State was able to seal the victory from the free throw line. The Wolfpack made more free throws (17-of-30) than the Deacs attempted (6-of-13) in the game, including 22-5 advantage in attempts in the second half.
The Demon Deacons hit the road to take on #24/21 Florida State this Sunday, Feb. 3. Tip-off in Tallahassee is set for 2 p.m. and will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra.
