Wake Forest’s Late Rally Falls Short at Georgia Tech

Brandon Childress recorded a career-high seven threes and a team-high 28 points in the game
ATLANTA- Brandon Childress sparked a late comeback with a career-high seven threes, but Wake Forest opened ACC play on the road, falling to Georgia Tech, 92-79.
Childress led the Deacs with career-highs of 28 points and seven threes, the most triples in a game since Dinos Mitoglou hit eight against LSU in 2016-17. Jaylen Hoard and Chaundee Brown each posted double-figure scoring with 19 and 10, respectively.
The first 10 points of the game were captured by freshmen, as Hoard opened the game with the first six. Sharone Wright, Jr., forced a turnover on the other end and finished with the fast break dunk to cut the deficit to four, forcing Tech to call a timeout and followed with a layup out of the break.
Both teams traded baskets, but Brandon Childress connected on back-to-back threes to put the Deacs within one, 22-21 with 4:10 remaining in the half. Georgia Tech finished the half, hitting six of its last eight, but Childress silenced the crowd with his third triple of the frame. The Yellow Jackets held on to a 33-28 advantage heading into the locker room.
Tech opened the second half on a 6-0 run, but three free throws from Childress and an And-1 for Hoard put the Demon Deacons back within five, 39-34. The Jackets connected on the other end, but Wake Forest responded with back-to-back triples from Torry Johnson and Chaundee Brown, pulling within four with under 13 minutes remaining.
Georgia Tech went on an 8-0 run until Ikenna Smart ended the Deacs' scoring drought with a jumper at the 7:39 mark. Sparked by a layup from Hoard, the Deacs went 4-for-4 and added another And-1, getting back within five, 63-58 with just under five minutes on the clock.
After allowing the Jackets to go 7-for-9 and regain a 10-point lead, Brown notched the steal and drew the foul to cut the lead to eight with three minutes to play.
Childress hit his career-high fifth three of the contest with 48 seconds on the clock and added two more with under 30 seconds to put Wake within nine.
The Yellow Jackets capped the action going 4-for-4 from the field, and finished the game 28-34 from the line.
Wake Forest opens ACC play at home against in-state foe and top-ranked Duke on Tuesday, Jan. 8 at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN.
