No. 1 Duke Defeats Wake Forest, 87-65

Jaylen Hoard led the Deacons with 13 points and nine boards.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest men's basketball (7-7, 0-2) welcomed top-ranked Duke to the LJVM Coliseum, but dropped 87-65. Tuesday's game marked the first time since 2012-13 that the Deacons have faced the No. 1 ranked team.

Jaylen Hoard led the Deacons with 13 points and nine rebounds. Brandon Childress and Sharone Wright, Jr. each contributed 12 points while Olivier Sarr also added nine boards.

Duke (13-1, 2-0 ACC) opened the scoring with a three, but Wake Forest found early answers as both sides traded baskets in the initial minutes. Ikenna Smart tied the game at 9-9 with his first And-1 of the season. Duke turned the ball over on the other side of the court, forcing the Blue Devils to call a timeout early.

Duke hit its next four from the field, but Childress remained hot from three following a career-game on Saturday and trimmed the lead to two with his first triple of the night. Wright, Jr. knotted the game at 14-14 with two made free throws with 12:49 to play in the half.

Childress lit up the Joel once again as he connected from behind the arc, drawing the foul and converting the And-1 for the four-point play, giving the Deacs an 18-16 lead heading into the timeout.

At the under-eight media timeout, Duke hit five of its last six, but the Demon Deacons continued the offensive charge, trailing by just two following a pair of free throws from Childress. Another layup from Wright, Jr. tied the contest again with just over five minutes to play. However, the Deacs went cold from the field in the waning minutes of the frame and Duke's Cam Reddish capped the half with a three, as Wake trailed by eight 42-34 heading into the locker room.

Out of the break, Wake Forest cut Duke's lead to 10, but the Blue Devils used 63 percent shooting in the second half to break away. Duke shot 70 percent from the field in the first 12 minutes of the second frame and held Wake Forest to under 30 percent shooting.

A four-plus minute scoring drought for the Deacons handed Duke a 73-48 lead with 8:26 on the clock. A career-high 30 points from Zion Williamson gave the Blue Devils a 28-point advantage that Wake Forest chipped into, but could not overcome.

Up next, Wake Forest hits the road to face Miami on Saturday, Jan. 12. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. on RSN.
