Wake Forest Drops to Miami on the Road

1/12/2019 4:11:00 PM | Men's Basketball

CORAL GABLES, Fla. -  Sophomore Chaundee Brown notched a career-high 22 points, but it wasn't enough as Wake Forest fell to Miami 76-65 on Saturday afternoon.

Freshman Michael Wynn and Brandon Childress each added 11 points, a career-high for Wynn. Jaylen Hoard led the Deacons with 11 boards.

Miami opened the game with a 6-2 lead, but hot shooting from Chaundee Brown quickly put the Deacons on top. Brown hit his stride early, scoring seven of the first 10 points for Wake Forest, while Sharone Wright, Jr. added a triple prior to the first media timeout.

Wake Forest used a 6-0 run out of the timeout capped by another Brown triple to take a 16-11 lead. Miami cut the lead to one with a three and a free throw and after both sides traded baskets, Miami took a four-point advantage at 24-20 with just over eight minutes remaining in the opening half.

With three minutes to play in the first frame, Miami sank a three to take a 31-25 lead, but a layup from Jaylen Hoard and an And-1 from Michael Wynn closed the gap to one. Wynn continued to make an impact on the court setting a career-high in points following a timely three to give the Deacons a 33-32 heading into the locker room at the half.

The Hurricanes came out of the break to regain the lead, but three free throws from Brandon Childress cut the Canes' lead to two. Wynn kept the momentum with Deacons grabbing his first career steal and converting the fast break layup on the other end. Just plays later, he hit his second triple of the game, cutting the deficit to 49-47 with just over 10 minutes to play.

An 8-0 run from Miami extended the Hurricanes' lead to 57-49. The Deacon offense stalled, unable to find a basket for nearly three minutes while Miami used five threes in the second frame to take control of the tempo.

Brown got the Deacons out of the scoring drought driving to the basket. Wake Forest called timeout with 2:43 to play, facing a 70-55 deficit. Childress drilled back-to-back threes with under two minutes on the clock, but late trips to the free throw line sealed the game for Miami.

The Deacons will return home for a Tuesday night matchup against in-state rival NC State on January 15. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. on ACC Network Extra.
