Deacs Upset No. 17 NC State Behind Double-Double from Hoard

1/15/2019 10:26:00 PM | Men's Basketball

Jaylen Hoard notches a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds in the victory

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.-  Wake Forest (8-8, 1-3 ACC)  picked up its first ACC win of the season in thrilling fashion, upsetting No. 17 NC State (14-3, 2-2 ACC) 71-67 on Tuesday night at the LJVM Coliseum. It was the Deacons' first win over a ranked opponent since defeating No. 8 Louisville, 88-81 in 2016-17.

Wake Forest has now won six of the last seven meetings against the in-state foe at the LJVM.

Jaylen Hoard led the way with his fourth career double-double, while Torry Johnson notched 11 points and Brandon Childress added 10 points and a career-high nine rebounds. The Deacons found a balanced offensive approach as three players tallied eight points and Ikenna Smart tied a career-high with six.

Wake Forest got the scoring started, but the Wolfpack ran out on a 8-0 run early. The Deacs connected on five straight from the field to tie the game 12-12 and free throws from Johnson handed Wake the 14-12 advantage.

Brandon Childress kept the offense rolling with a jumper and a backhanded layup, sparking a 14-4 run. The defense took care of the ball on the other end, out-rebounding the Pack 14-8 after the first 10 minutes of play, to take a 28-18 lead. Wake Forest held NC State without a basket for over two minutes en route to another 10 point lead at 32-22 with 5:19 on the clock.

The Deacs got into the bonus and made several trips to the free throw line to extend its lead 37-26. Sharone Wright, Jr. converted the fast break layup off a steal from Chaundee Brown to take a 39-26 advantage with just 30 seconds to play in the half. Johnson remained hot with a three from the corner as the Deacs took a 42-27 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Wake Forest shot 56 percent (15-27) from the field, while holding the Pack to just 30 percent shooting (11-37) in the first frame.

Jaylen Hoard led the charge in the second half, scoring the first five points for the Deacs out of the break. Wright, Jr. followed through with another fast break layup and Brown added a pair of free throws as Wake Forest controlled a 51-29 lead. NC State slowly crawled its way back with back-to-back threes to cut the Deacs' lead to 11. A 17-2 run from the Pack and a six-plus minute scoring drought for the Deacons pulled NC State within two, 58-56 with just under eight minutes to play.

Wake Forest used a 6-0 run to regain the lead, 64-58 heading into the final media timeout of the game. Back in the bonus, Wake Forest strung together three free throws, but a triple from NC State put the Wolfpack back within one with under two minutes remaining.

Johnson sealed the victory for the Demon Deacons with a jumper before knocking down a pair from the free throw line to give Wake Forest a four point advantage with just 13 seconds on the clock. NC State's attempt from behind the arc fell short, as Wake walked away with the upset.

Up next, Wake Forest will continue its stretch of facing ranked opponents on the road as the Deacs travel to No. 9 Virginia Tech on Saturday, Jan. 19 at 4 p.m., and No. 4 Virginia on Tuesday, Jan. 22 at 9 p.m.
