Hurricanes Sneak Past Deacs in ACC Opener

Ivana Raca recorded a double-double as the Deacs fell in their first ACC game of the season
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Wake Forest women's basketball team dropped its ACC opener Sunday (Jan. 6), falling to Miami 72-57 inside the LJVM Coliseum.
The Demon Deacons (9-5, 0-1 ACC) held a four-point halftime lead and were within one of the Hurricanes (14-3, 2-0 ACC) through three quarters, but a strong fourth quarter by the visitors proved to be the difference in the game.
Ivana Raca recorded her team-leading fifth double-double of the season, finishing with 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Alex Sharp added a team-high 15 points. Ona Udoh filled the stat sheet, finishing with nine points, nine rebounds, three blocks and a pair of assists.
The Deacs used a 5-0 run in the opening quarter to build a six-point lead, their largest lead of the half. Kaylen Dickson opened the run with an old-fashioned three-point play before Udoh converted a layup on the fast break to put Wake Forest up 17-11 late in the opening period. The teams would trade baskets throughout most of the first half, and the Deacs would go up by six again late in the second quarter before taking a four-point lead into the break.
A 9-0 Miami run midway through the third put the visitors up by six before the Deacs came back to make it a one-point game headed to the fourth. The Hurricanes pulled away from the free throw line, scoring 11 of their 23 fourth-quarter points from the charity stripe, and outscored Wake Forest 23-9 in the quarter to seal the victory.
Wake Forest out-rebounded Miami by one (42-41) extending its streak of having the rebounding advantage to all 15 games this year.
The Deacs close out a two-game ACC homestand on Thursday, January 10, as Boston College comes to town. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. and will be broadcast on the ACC's regional sports networks, which include Fox Sports South.
