Wake Forest Cross Country Competes in Nuttycombe Invitational
10/18/2019 8:14:00 PM | Cross Country
MADISON, WISC. – The Wake Forest men's and women's cross country teams took part in their biggest meet of the season to date, with both squads competing in the Nuttycombe Invitational at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. The Wake Forest women finished 23rd of 36 teams with 603 points. The Demon Deacon men were 29th of 33 squads with 715 points.
Samantha Halvorsen led the Wake Forest women with a 68th place finish, clocking a 21:03 over the 6K course. She was followed by Elise Wright in 21:10.4, Meredith Helton in 21:30.7 and Madeline Rehm at 21:14.3. Other Wake Forest runners included Hannah Brookover (21:47.8), Isabelle Dutranoit (22:14.4) and Johanna Schulz (22:44.8).
"The women had a good day, not a great day," said assistant coach Ashley Botham. "We have a few things to correct over the next two weeks before ACC's, but I'm confident we will. Every race is a learning experience and I know the women will be hungry to fix the errors from today before our next race. It was wonderful having Sam Halvorsen back in the line-up to lead the team, she did great. Meredith Helton also had an outstanding day and moved up very well all race long."
"Our women got out a bit tentative but came back and beat some ranked teams," said head coach John Hayes. "It wasn't their best race but we feel we will have some points to qualify for NCAAs. I'm looking forward to the ACC Championship."
Zach Facioni was Wake Forest's top finisher on the men's side, taking 67th place with a 24:25.4 over the 8K course. Jack Tiernan finished 98th in 24:36.4 while redshirt freshman Carter Coughlin turned in a 24:55.0. Brent Bailey finished fourth among the Deacons in 25:48.3 with Jonathan Velasco clocking a 26:01.2.
"The men are very young," said Hayes. "Two of our six were running in their first college race and a third was only running his second 8K. They've been training in a very consistent and disciplined way so I was a bit shocked with the outcome despite our youth. Our fitness is very good for the ACC Championship and I think we can shock some teams. When five out of six have poor performances, then I will take responsibility for it. These guys will be ready in two weeks for the ACC Championship."
Wake Forest's next meet will be at the ACC Championships on Friday, Nov. 1 at Virginia Tech.
