WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Estelle Laurier scored two goals, including the golden goal in the second overtime, to help Wake Forest outlast Pitt, 3-2, at Spry Stadium on Thursday night.
Laurier tied the game at 1-1 in the 56th minute and then added the game-winner with a rocket from 25 yards out in the 104th minute for the game-winner.
"The kids have been really good about sticking to it and fighting every day in training through a tough period," head coach Tony da Luz said. "I thought we deserved the win tonight. We played well, created a lot of good chances. I'm really happy for the team and it's a bit of a relief."
The Demon Deacons (6-6-4, 1-4-3 ACC) out-shot the Panthers (5-8-3, 2-4-2 ACC) by a 28-7 margin, including 8-0 in the two overtime periods.
Pitt, though, scored the first goal in the 52nd minute. Anna Bout hit the crossbar, but Amanda West followed up by putting away the rebound.
After Laurier tied the game at 1-1, Hayley Younginer put the Deacs ahead, 2-1. Sofia Rossi sent a through ball to Younginer, who had her shot deflect off the keeper and a defender, and then into the net, exactly a minute after Laurier tied it.
West tied Pitt's program record with her 10th goal of the season in the 74th minute. Her second goal of the game came from the edge of the box when she deflected a shot off the keeper to knot the score at 2-2.
Laurier found the game-winner almost four minutes into the second overtime. She dribbled into space, unleashing a shot which beat the keeper just under the crossbar for the win.
Amaia Pena made 12 saves for the Panthers, but couldn't come up with the stop on Laurier's winner. Mia Raben made a pair of saves for the Deacs.
Holding its annual pink game, Wake Forest raised more than $3,200 for breast cancer research. "The kids were really excited about the pink game, because they know what the proceeds mean to cancer research," da Luz added. "To raise that much money is incredible, and it's going to have an impact on the cause."
