Giovanna DeMarco scored early to put the Deacs in front, but a second-half PK gave FSU the win.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Giovanna DeMarco's early goal wasn't enough for Wake Forest in a 2-1 loss to No. 5 Florida State at Spry Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
DeMarco put the Demon Deacons (6-7-4, 1-5-3 ACC) ahead of the Seminoless (13-4-0, 7-2-0 ACC) in the sixth minute. Hayley Younginer had a shot stopped by a diving save. Ryanne Brown took the rebound and dished it off to a wide open DeMarco, who had a perfect far-post finish to give Wake Forest a 1-0 lead.
Florida State tied it up in the 30th minute on a goal from Kristen McFarland. Then Deyna Castellanos put away a penalty kick in the 62nd minute for what proved to be the game-winner.
Wake Forest was inches away from a pair of goals. In the 51st minute, DeMarco tried to beat FSU keeper Caroline Jeffers top shelf but the shot clanked off the crossbar.
In the 87th minute, Madison Hammond got free behind the defense, but her effort ricocheted off the left post as FSU maintained its lead.
"I thought we jumped on them pretty early and scored a good goal to begin with. Managing the lead, we went a little bit conservative by nature and I wish we would've kept attacking, but we let them back into the game," head coach Tony da Luz said. "Down the stretch we fought like crazy. Our kids gave it everything they had. We were a little unlucky, drawing a lot of iron today."
The Deacs had an 8-6 advantage in shots, though FSU led in corner kicks, 7-0.
Wake Forest closes the regular season on Halloween night, traveling to Notre Dame for a 7 p.m. kickoff on ACCNX.
