Despite out-shooting the Irish 17-4, Wake Forest was unable to overcome a 21st-minute goal.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- No. 2 Wake Forest conceded an early goal and failed to find the back of the net in a 1-0 loss to Notre Dame at Spry Stadium on Saturday night.
The Demon Deacons (12-3-1, 5-2-0 ACC) out-shot the Fighting Irish (8-6-1, 2-5-0 ACC) by a 17-4 margin, but Notre Dame limited Wake Forest to five shots on goal and keeper Duncan Turnbull stopped all five for the shutout.
"[Notre Dame] did a great job defensively," head coach Bobby Muuss said. "We've got to learn a lot from this game. Notre Dame is a very well-organized team. They got behind the ball extremely quickly, and we didn't execute."
In the 21st minute, Patrick Coleman dribbled to the edge of the 18 and snuck a shot just inside the far post for Notre Dame's only shot on goal of the night, which proved to be the game-winner.
Wake Forest's best chance came in the 52nd minute, when Bruno Lapa fired a shot towards the upper corner, but Turnbull made a jumping, full-extension save to keep the Deacs off the board.
The loss was Wake Forest's first at Spry in regular season ACC play since 2013, going 22-0-2 since falling to then-No. 2 Notre Dame on Nov. 2, 2013.
Wake Forest closes the regular season on the road, traveling to Louisville for a game on the ACC Network on Friday at 6 p.m.
The Deacs did clinch a first-round bye in the ACC Championship and will therefore host a game on Nov. 10 after playing Louisville this weekend.
