Deacs Edged by Oklahoma State in East Lake Cup Semifinals

ATLANTA, Ga. – The Wake Forest men's golf team was edged by Oklahoma State 3-2 on Tuesday in the semifinals of the East Lake Cup. The Demon Deacons will play Vanderbilt in the consolation match of the tournament on Wednesday.
Marco Steyn and Eugenio Chacarra posted wins for the Deacons, but the Cowboys captured the other three matches to advance to the final.
"It was a close, hard-fought match, which we knew it would be," said Haas. "As a player, you have to know that it could come down to your match. This event is a great opportunity to play team match play and get used to format and the pressure of playing a great opponent."
Marco Steyn posted the first point of the day for Wake Forest, downing Hazen Newman 3&2. Oklahoma State answered with a pair of wins to take a 2-1 lead as Austin Eckroat topped Mark Power 3&2 and Brian Stark defeated Alex Fitzpatrick 2&1.
Eugenio Chacarra tied the match for Wake Forest as he completed a 3&2 win over Rayhan Thomas. The final match was all square through 15 holes after Eric Bae evened the match with a birdie at No. 15. OSU's Aman Gupta retook the lead by winning No. 16 and the players halved No. 17. Gupta made birdie on the last to secure a 2-up win and clinch the victory for Oklahoma State.
With the forecast of rain on Wednesday, the consolation match has been moved up to the morning. The Wake Forest-Vanderbilt match will begin at 8:40 a.m., with live coverage on Golf Channel beginning at 10:30 a.m.
