ATLANTA, Ga. – The Wake Forest men's golf team concluded play at the East Lake Cup with a 3-2 loss to Vanderbilt on Wednesday.
Eric Bae and Eugenio Chacarra posted wins for the Deacons, but the Commodores captured the other three matches to win the match.
"We have to learn how to win matches," said Haas. "We got off to such a slow start today. Everybody, except Eugenio, was down early. We battled, like we always do, but we dug ourselves too big of a hole. We have to keep working on our short games and keep getting better. You have to hate to lose and hopefully we will use this as a motivator for the spring."
Wake Forest began the match slow, trailing in four of the five matches on the front nine. Vanderbilt capitalized on two of those matches with William Moll defeating Alex Fitzpatrick 4&3 and Harrison Ott topping Mark Power 4&2 to give the Commodores a 2-0 lead.
Bae was 2-down early through five holes, but rallied for a 3&2 win over John Augenstein by not dropping another hole the rest of the match.
Chacarra took advantage of a strong start, leading 4-up through six holes to take control of his match. He posted a 3&2 win over Reid Davenport for his second straight match play win.
The match came down to the final match on the course, where Marco Steyn and Matthew Riedel had a back-and-forth contest. Riedel took a 2-up lead for Vanderbilt with two holes to play before Steyn birdied the next to last hole to stay in the match. They halved the final hole for Riedel to complete a 1-up victory and give the Commodores the win.
The Demon Deacons now travel to Nassau, Bahamas to conclude the fall season Friday-Sunday with the White Sands Intercollegiate.
