PARADISE ISLAND, Bahamas. – The Wake Forest men's golf team began play Friday at the White Sands Intercollegiate, their final event of the fall season. Junior Parker Gillam set a school record by shooting a 12-under 60 during the first round at the Ocean Club Golf Course.
Gillam, playing the event as an individual, had nine birdies, two eagles and just one bogey to shoot 60 and hold the tournament's first round lead by six strokes. He broke the Wake Forest single-round scoring record of 62, set by Webb Simpson in 2007-08 during the first round of the Western Refining All-American. Gillam's 12-under in relation to par shattered the previous school record of 9-under, set by Chris Kite in 1985-86 and matched by Todd Lynch in 1996-97, Simpson in 2007-18 and Cameron Young last year.
"Parker played an incredible round today," said head coach Jerry Haas. "To shoot 12-under in any round is a tremendous accomplishment and is a sign of the hard work he has been doing this fall."
As a team, the Demon Deacons are tied for sixth place at 6-under following the first round. Florida State is the first round leader at 13-under, followed by Houston at 12-under and SMU at 10-under.
Among the players in the lineup, Marco Steyn had the low round of the day for Wake Forest, shooting a 3-under 69. Alex Fitzpatrick is at 2-under, Mark Power is at 1-under, Eugenio Chacarra is at even par and Eric Bae is at 1-over.
The tournament continues on Saturday and concludes Sunday at the Ocean Club.
