ATLANTA, Ga. – The Wake Forest women's golf team advanced to the championship match of the 2019 East Lake Cup after a 3-1-1 victory over Arizona in Tuesday's semifinals. The Demon Deacons will play Auburn in Wednesday's championship match.
The Demon Deacons got victories from Emilia Migliaccio, Siyun Liu and Vanessa Knecht to post a victory in the semifinals.
"We've never seen the golf course, and so for us to see it yesterday, I think we learned some things, moved some targets around today," said head coach Kim Lewellen. "These ladies are fired up and they love match play. We can't simulate this experience. We can't simulate match play against one of the best teams in the country. This is what hopefully will happen here in the spring, both in our conference championship now that it's match play and also in the NCAA's. So I want them to go and enjoy the moment, figure out how they can improve in match play, and take everything they can from this experience. To enjoy this experience tomorrow, but also to learn for the spring and the championships ."
Migliaccio posted Wake Forest's first point of the match, never trailing in a 2&1 win over Sandra Nordaas. For Migliaccio, she remains unbeaten in collegiate match play after winning all three of her matches at last year's NCAA Championship.
Liu extended the lead to 2-0 as she completed a 1-up victory over Therese Warner. Liu was 2-down with four holes to play before rallying to win No. 15 and No. 16 to draw even and winning No. 18 to secure the victory.
Arizona got their point as Ya Chun Chang defeated Rachel Kuehn 5&4.
Vanessa Knecht, who shared medalist honors in stroke play, secured the final point with her 1-up win over Gile Bite Starkute. Knecht was 2-up through 13 holes before Starkute won No. 14 and No. 16 to draw even. With the match all square on No. 18, Knecht birdied the last to win the hole and the match.
"I am thrilled with how Vanessa is playing, especially as she is just a sophomore," said Lewellen. "To come into an event of this magnitude and perform like this, both is stroke play and match play, shows she can play at a very high level."
In the final match on the course, Lauren Walsh was all square through 16 holes against Vivian Hou when the match was halted, officially going down as a tie.
With the forecast of rain on Wednesday, the final match has been moved up to the morning. The Wake Forest-Auburn match will begin at 8:30 a.m., with live coverage on Golf Channel beginning at 10:30 a.m.
