Wake Forest Head Coach Danny Manning
Opening Statement:
"Finding a way to win down the stretch to win a ball game. Very close ball game. Columbia did some really good things, made some tough shots, but our guys stayed poised down the stretch and we did enough things to give ourselves a chance to win the ball game. We have to get off to a better start offensively. That's two games in a row we've settled for long jump shots opposed to attacking the paint. That takes away from our aggressiveness. I thought our freshmen gave us a great spark, but I also think our guys realized that we have to get to the free-throw line, and we started to do that more and more as the game went on."
On Getting to the Free Throw Line:
"We want you to shoot open shots, but if you miss a couple of them, you got to get the paint. You got to get to the free throw line. We have multiple guys play quality minutes and not get to the free throw line as much as they should be. We've got to get more pressure on their defense, get more paint touches. We have to put more pressure on teams running the floor in transition, whether it's taking it out of the nets or off a miss. We have guys that are capable of doing that."
On the play down the stretch:
"Found a way to win. Coming out of the timeout we wanted Chaundee [Brown] to get downhill and he did that. We put the ball in Brandon's hands, the ball bounced on the rim a couple of times and it finally dropped in and he made a play. For us throughout the ball game, there were nine times where we got three stops in a row and that gave us a chance to win the ball game."
Columbia Head Coach Jim Engles
Opening Statement:
"It's a tough game. I think we played well enough to win. They made some big plays at the end. I think we got some good contributions, especially from some out our freshmen. It's a great group of kids. I'm happy we came down here and competed against an ACC level team. We have a tough stretch here, we got to play Virginia and St John's, but this allows us to build some confidence. I thought Mike Smith played like an All-ACC level guard; he really controlled the game and did a great job for us. We just got to stay confident"
On what Columbia did to rally from eight down late in the game:
"Nothing in particular, we went to a more open offense and allowed Mike to create more for us. I think Mike had seven assists, so they really focused on him like we were focused on Childress and it created more opportunities at the rim."
On Chaundee Brown:
"He did a great job. He was the one guy we talked about, him and Childress. He came in and stepped up that's what good players do they step up when they need to."
On the defense on Childress' game-winner:
"The ball bounced like eight times, right? I don't know if there's anything else we could've done. The Lord is going to knock one of these off the rim for us, one of these times it's going to happen. He made a tough shot"
