WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- No. 7 Wake Forest clinched a spot in the ACC Championship semifinal, playing No. 22 Virginia Tech to a 2-2 draw and advancing in penalty kicks, 6-5, at Spry Stadium on Sunday evening.
The Hokies (9-5-3) saved the Demon Deacons' (13-3-2) first penalty kick attempt, but Wake Forest made six in a row after that. Dominic Peters, who came in off the bench after the two overtimes, stopped two of Virginia Tech's last three attempts to push the Deacs through to the next round. Wake Forest will play at No. 4 Virginia at 4 p.m. on the ACC Network.
"Good result in the end, because we advanced. But credit to Virginia Tech, they did what they do, and they do it well," head coach Bobby Muuss said. "We've got our work cut out for us going into Wednesday. I'm super proud of these guys. When you think about the guys who stepped up, some young guys stepped up in penalties. Dom Peters comes in the end, back against the wall, right? Final kick, that's what you dream about in a lot of ways, and he makes two big saves to advance us."
After a scoreless first half, Wake Forest jumped ahead with two goals in the second half. Joey DeZart put away a one-timer off an Isaiah Parente corner kick in the 60th minute to make the score 1-0, then Kyle Holcomb scored in the 76th minute off assists from Parente and Calvin Harris to push the margin to 2-0.
The Hokies responded with two goals over the next six minutes to equalize. James Kasak had a shot deflect off two Wake Forest defenders and into the back of the net in the 78th minute to make the score 2-1, and Daniel Pereira scored on a free kick from 20 yards out in the 82nd minute.
In penalties, Alistair Johnston had his attempt saved to start things out. After that, the Deacs received five straight makes from Omar Hernandez, Parente, Harris, Bruno Lapa, Holcomb and Machop Chol.
Virginia Tech made its first four attempts before Peters saved two of the last three to clinch it for Wake Forest.
In regulation, Wake Forest put 12 of its 21 shots on goal, but Virginia Tech's Mathijs Swaneveld made 10 saves to keep the Hokies in the game. Wake also had an 11-2 advantage in corners and 21-8 lead in shots.
