The Wake Forest women's cross country team took fourth place out of 43 teams on Friday at the NCAA Southeast Regional held at Charlottesville, Va. The men's team placed seventh out of 39 teams in the final meet of the year for both teams. Deacons Samantha Halvorsen, Madeline Rehm and Zach Facioni earned All-Region honors for their performances.
The women's fourth place finish matched last year's finish at the regional, tying for the highest finish by a Wake Forest women's team since prior to 2005. The men's seventh place finish was their second best showing at the championships since prior to 2005.
Samantha Halvorsen was Wake Forest's top finisher in 13th place in the team competition with a time of 20:30.9 for the 6K course. She was followed by Madeline Rehm in 22nd place (20:54.9), Johanna Schulz in 26th (21:00.0), and Elise Wright in 30th (21:07.9). Hannah Brookover rounded out the top five, finishing 42nd in 21:18.1.
"The women ran with a lot of heart and toughness today," said women's cross country coach Ashley Botham. "They put themselves out there and fought for their teammates every step of the way. We had a great day with several new personal bests and two All-Region performances in Sam Halvorsen and Madeline Rehm. Johanna Schulz, Madeline Rehm, and Amy Harding-Delooze all ran nearly a minute faster than their lifetime bests. Even though we fell short of our ultimate goal of making Nationals, they laid it all out there. I couldn't be more proud of this group of women."
In the men's race, Zach Facioni was Wake Forest's top runner with a 14th place finish in 30:25.7 over the 10K course. Carter Coughlin placed 28th (30:46.4) followed by Aaron Las Heras in 30th (30:48.4) and Jack Tiernan in 37th (30:56.9). John LePino was the team's fifth scorer in 97th place (32:11.9).
"The guys have been great all year in how they attacked the season, in their training and their lifestyle," said head coach John Hayes. "Our top four overall did better than last year, but we unfortunately fell short at five. Our team is young – we had two freshmen in our top four, a sophomore and a junior, and to see how far we've come in the last four years – moving up 16 spots in the region – makes me excited about where we are going. We look to qualify both teams for NCAAs next year."
