The Deacs advanced into the NCAA third round, where they'll play No. 13 Michigan on Dec. 1.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- No. 4 seed Wake Forest clinched a spot in the round of 16 at the NCAA Championship for the fifth-straight year by blanking defending national champion Maryland, 3-0, at Spry Stadium on Sunday evening.

The Demon Deacons (14-4-2) received goals from Bruno Lapa, Machop Chol and Kyle Holcomb en route to the victory, while allowing only one shot on goal on the defensive end.

Wake Forest will play next against No. 13 seed Michigan. That game will be played on Dec. 1 at 5 p.m. on ACCNX.

The win was the 500th in Wake Forest's program history. With the program beginning in 1980, that's an average of more than 12 wins per season.

The Terrapins (11-8-2) had posted seven-straight shutouts in NCAA Tournament play dating back to 2016 before conceding three goals to Wake Forest.

"In order to be the best, you want to play the best. A lot of credit goes to Maryland," co-acting head coach Steve Armas said. "For us, I thought our guys were pretty prepared coming into the game...they were very intent on how to win the game, so I'm very proud of our team and how we played tonight."

The Deacs jumped in front in the 26th minute. Isaiah Parente delievered a corner to Joey DeZart, who had his shot deflected. Lapa was there to put away the rebound for what proved to be the game-winner.

Chol added a goal in the 50th minute. Parente stole the ball from a Terrapin defender and fed Chol inside the box, where he beat the keeper to extend the lead to 2-0.

Holcomb sealed the deal in the 89th minute. While Maryland was pushing forward, Tater Rennhack led the counter and sent in a cross from the right side to a wide open Holcomb for the tap-in finish.

Head coach Bobby Muuss will be back on the field against Michigan after serving a one-game NCAA Tournament suspension against Maryland.
