WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- No. 4 Wake Forest clinched a spot in the NCAA Championship quarterfinals with a 3-1 victory over No. 13 Michigan at Spry Stadium on Sunday evening.
The Demon Deacons (15-4-2) will be at Spry once again on Saturday, Dec. 7, taking on UC Santa Barbara at 5 p.m.
Kyle Holcomb scored a pair of goals to lead the Deacs offensively over the Wolverines (11-5-6).
"I'm proud of the guys. I think they competed today, the same way they did in training," head coach Bobby Muuss said. "It's no mystery why Kyle Holcomb had the game he had today with the way he's been training. With how hard he works for the team, he makes everyone else around him better."
Holcomb put the Deacs on the board in the 50th minute. Machop Chol sent in a long cross from the right side, where Holcomb headed it past the keeper.
In the 70th minute, Bruno Lapa was fouled in the box and stepped up to the penalty spot himself, putting away the PK for what proved to be the game-winner.
Michigan scored in the 77th minute, when Derick Broche put away a rebound from Nebojsa Popovic, to cut the deficit to 2-1.
Wake Forest answered back at the 83-minute mark, with Tater Rennhack finding Justyn Thomas along the right sideline. Thomas crossed it to Holcomb inside the box for a one-timer finish.
"What a gutsy performance. When they came back and scored and it was 2-1, a lot of teams would have been a little uneasy, but we got better," Muuss added. "I think we managed the game at the end very well. To get the third goal was fantastic, and against a team that hasn't let up a goal in a long time."
Andrew Pannenberg was solid in goal, making five saves to maintain the Deacon lead.
This will mark Wake Forest's fourth trip to the NCAA quarterfinals in the last five years.
