Â
This marked the season finale for both teams.
Newman finished the game with 262 total yards including a team-high 87 yards on the ground.
The redshirt junior connected with eight different receivers on the night including senior Kendall Hinton and freshman Donovan Greene. Hinton and Greene led the Demon Deacons with three catches as both had a touchdown catch in the first half.
Freshman safety Trey Rucker led the way defensively, tying a career-high with 10 tackles. He had 10 tackles in the last two games of the 2019 season.
Â
WHAT HAPPENED:
- Wake Forest scored on the game's opening drive with a seven-play, 65-yard drive that was capped by a 29-yard touchdown reception by Kendall Hinton.
- MSU scored the next 10 points with a Matt Coghlin field goal and a 14-yard interception return for a touchdown by defensive lineman Mike Panasiuk on a deflected pass from WFU QB Jamie Newman.
- After the Deacs and Spartans traded a pair of touchdowns early in the second quarter, Newman hit redshirt senior tight end Jack Freudenthal on a 44-yard touchdown strike. Michigan State added a field goal in the final minute of the half to make the halftime score, 21-20.
- Michigan State opened the scoring in the third quarter on a methodical 10-play, 73-yard touchdown drive to regain the lead, 27-21.
- With the Spartans driving in the third and fourth quarters, Wake's defense forced a pair of turnovers but could not turn them into points.
- After a missed field goal by Michigan State with 3:03 remaining in the game, the Deacs had one final opportunity, but were unable score.
WHAT IT MEANS:
- Wake Forest dropped its first bowl game since 2011 and only sustained its fifth bowl loss in program history.
IN THE SPOTLIGHT:
- Redshirt Senior left tackle Justin Herron started his 51st all-time game at Wake Forest, setting a new school record as he passed DE Wendell Dunn (2014-17).
STAGGERING STATISTICS:
- Boogie Basham recorded his 11th sack of the season in the first half, which moved him second place for sacks in a season in program history.
- In addition, it is the most sacks by a Demon Deacon in 27 years.
- Newman finished the season with 26 touchdown passes, which tied him with Riley Skinner (2009) for second most in a single season.
- On the game: "We did a lot of good things this year. We didn't finish the season the way we wanted, but we'll get back to the drawing board and attack next season with a vengeance. I want to thank all of the Deacs that came up to New York. Our alumni and student showed us tremendous support especially being two days after Christmas."
- On seniors: "They really changed the culture of the program. We now have an expectation to win in that locker room. We have won 30-plus games and have been to four consecutive bowl games. I think it says a lot that we are no longer just satisfied to get to a bowl game."
