Conti ties career-high with 19 points
WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Wake Forest women's basketball team (10-12, 1-8 ACC) dropped a road contest to the Florida State Seminoles (19-3, 7-2 ACC), 85-61, Sunday afternoon in Tallahassee. Noles' forward Kiah Gillespie led all scorers with 22 points. Gina Conti led the Demon Deacons, tying a career-high with 19 points and six assists. The 19 from Conti marks her second straight game with 15 or more points.
The Deacs entered the matchup with the Seminoles after a close contest with the unbeaten N.C. State Wolfpack. After defeating Virginia on the road, a week prior, Wake Forest seemed to have found a boost it was looking for on both ends of the floor.
Ivana Raca (12 pts), Christina Morra (10pts) and Ona Udoh (10 pts) did their part for the Deacs in effort to stay within reach in the second half.
Along with Gillespie, Florida State had four other players score in double-figures. Damage was done in the low block, as the Deacs were outrebounded (34-22) for only the fourth time this season.
Both teams had a decent day shooting from the field. Wake Forest found a spark in the third quarter, shooting 8-for-12 against the Seminoles who went scoreless from deep (0-for-4) coming out of the halftime break.
Nicki Ekhomu (17pts) and Gillespie scored 10 points each in the second half. The Seminoles put up 26 points in the paint after the break and they kept the lead throughout, securing the win.
Up next, the Demon Deacons host Clemson on Thursday, February 7 at LJVM Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. Coverage will be provided by Regional Sports Network (RSN).
