Wake Forest suffers its first loss of the season
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The top-ranked Wake Forest men's tennis team fell for the first time this season, dropping a 5-2 decision to No. 13 Virginia Friday (Feb. 8) evening at the Boars Head Sports Club.
The match was played as a nonconference match with the two teams set to face off in ACC play on March 15 in Winston-Salem.
Wake Forest (6-1) opened the match by taking the doubles point over the Cavaliers (6-1). Within moments of each other, the Demon Deacon duos of Borna Gojo/Alan Gadjiev and Siddhant Banthia/Melios Efstathiou each claimed 6-4 wins at the No. 1 and 3 positions, respectively, to secure the doubles point.
The Cavaliers stormed back with three consecutive wins to jump ahead by a 3-1 margin. Petros Chrysochos cut the deficit to one at the No. 2 singles position, defeating Henrik Wiersholm, 7-6(4), 6-3.
The two remaining matches would each go into a third set after the Deacs had won the opening set in each match. Julian Zlobinsky dropped a 6-4, 4-6, 4-6 decision at the No. 6 spot, clinching the match for the Cavaliers, before Gojo fell in his No. 1 singles match, 6-4, 6-7(3), 1-6.
Wake Forest is back in action this Sunday, Feb. 10, with a doubleheader against Baylor and Tennessee Tech. The Deacs will face the ninth-ranked Bears at 1 p.m. before closing out the day with a 5 p.m. match against the Golden Eagles.
