Deacs in Second After First Day of General Hackler Championship

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Wake Forest men's golf team opened play Monday at the General Hackler Championship. The Demon Deacons shot 18-under over the first two rounds and are tied for second place entering the final round.
North Florida is the 36-hole leader at 22-under, followed by Liberty and the Deacs at 18-under. Wake Forest was tied with North Florida at the end of the first round at 10-under, before shooting 8-under during the second round of the day.
"The guys came out extremely quick with a fabulous front nine," said associate head coach Aaron O'Callaghan. "We stumbled in the middle, but showed great resilience and determination to finish with a flurry of birdies. That got us back into contention to start the final round. Tomorrow will be exciting as we compete against some great teams, but this is what our guys practice for."
Cameron Young led the Deacons on Monday, shooting rounds of 66 and 68 to finish the day in second place at 10-under, one shot off the individual lead. Eric Bae is also in the top five of the individual leaderboard at 6-under after back-to-back rounds of 69.
Lee Detmer is 1-under par through 36 holes, while Eugenio Chacarra is at even par and Parker Gillam is at 5-over. Alex Fitzpatrick, playing as an individual, is T-8th at 4-under.
Wake Forest also has another group of players competing at the Bash at the Beach. The Deacs' "B" team is in third place with Kengo Aoshima and Kyle Sterbinsky both in the individual top 10.
Both tournaments in Myrtle Beach conclude Tuesday with the final round.
