MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Wake Forest men's golf team concluded play Tuesday at the General Hackler Championship as Cameron Young took home medalist honors as the Demon Deacons finished second as a team. The victory was Young's third career win as he becomes the third Deacon to win a tournament this season.
Young shot a final-round 70 at the Dunes Golf and Beach Club to finish the tournament at 12-under, posting a two-shot victory. It comes after Eric Bae won the Steelwood Intercollegiate and Parker Gillam won the Seminole Intercollegiate, marking the first time since 2004 that Wake Forest has had the medalist at three straight tournaments (Bill Haas, Sean Moore, Bill Haas). The victories also mark the first time since 1983-84 that three different Deacons have won a title in the same season (Mark Thaxton, Jerry Haas, Billy Andrade).
The Demon Deacons shot 2-over during the final round to finish in second place at 16-under. North Florida took the title at 21-under.
"I'm proud of the way we competed today," said associate head coach Aaron O'Callaghan. "There are lots of positives we can take away from this week. It came down to the wire and on this occasion, we came up just short. I'm delighted for Cameron to get his third victory and we are looking forward to a quick turnaround for the Valspar next week."
Cameron Young led the Deacons on Monday, shooting rounds of 66 and 68 to finish the day in second place at 10-under, one shot off the individual lead. Eric Bae is also in the top five of the individual leaderboard at 6-under after back-to-back rounds of 69.
Eric Bae posted a sixth place finish at 7-under par after shooting a final-round 71. Alex Fitzpatrick, playing as an individual, also had a top-10 finish, shooting 71 on Tuesday to finish T-7th at 5-under.
Wake Forest also had another group of players competing at the Bash at the Beach. The Deacs' "B" team finished in second place with Kengo Aoshima and Marco Steyn both in the individual top 10.
The Deacs return to action with the Valspar Collegiate in Palm City, Fla, beginning Sunday.
