PALM CITY, Fla. – The Wake Forest men's golf team opened play Sunday at the Valspar Collegiate. The Deacs shot 6-under during the first round at The Floridian and are tied for the tournament's 18-hole lead.
In a tournament that features 14 of the top 35 teams nationally, including six of the top 10, the No. 6 Demon Deacons are tied for the lead with No. 30 Florida State and No. 31 South Carolina. Top-ranked Oklahoma State is one shot back at 5-under, while No. 13 Auburn is the only other team under par at 3-under.
"We got off to a good start today," said head coach Jerry Haas. "We wore our Irish green polos and they gave us some St. Patrick's Day luck. We put ourselves in a good position, but we need to play well again tomorrow."
Cameron Young, coming off a win at the General Hackler Championship, continued his strong play with a 5-under 66 in the first round. He is T-2nd on the individual leaderboard, one shot off the lead.
Eugenio Chacarra shot a 2-under 69 and Alex Fitzpatrick shot a 1-under 70 to give Wake Forest three players in red figures on Sunday. Eric Bae shot 73 and Parker Gillam shot 80 to round out the Demon Deacon lineup.
With the forecast of inclement weather on Tuesday, the second and third rounds of the Valspar Collegiate are now scheduled for Monday at The Floridian.
