CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Despite five players reaching double-figure scoring, 13th-seeded Wake Forest fell 79-71 to the No. 12 seed Miami in the first game of the ACC Tournament on Tuesday afternoon at the Spectrum Center. Wake Forest finishes the 2018-19 season 11-20 overall with a 4-14 mark in ACC play.

Jaylen Hoard and Brandon Childress each recorded 16 points and Chaundee Brown added 13. Freshmen Hoard and Isaiah Mucius led the team in rebounding with seven boards each.

After a 6-0 run for Miami (14-17, 5-13) to open play, the Deacs came to life on both sides of the ball forcing four quick turnovers and making an 8-0 run to force Miami to burn a timeout as the Deacs led 16-9 with 12:33 to play. After a nearly four-minute scoring drought for Wake, Miami took the lead with a three. The Deacons answered back tying the game, but a 6-0 run for the Canes put Miami back on top 31-28 with under a minute remaining in the half.
.
The back-and forth-first half featured three ties and eight lead changes, but Miami held on to a three-point advantage at the break. Childress led the first half scoring with 12 points and hit a clutch three with just seconds remaining in the half to give Wake the lead, but the Canes responded with a triple of their own at the buzzer to take the 34-31 lead into the locker room.

Miami went on a 7-0 run in the opening minutes of the second half to jump in front 43-35 with 16 minutes to go. The Hurricanes went on top by 10 late in the frame, taking a 61-51 lead with 7:24 remaining.

Triples from Childress and Brown sparked a late Wake Forest rally. Mucius picked up a steal and finished with a jumper to bring Wake within seven. The Demon Deacons made a timely defensive stop and Hoard found Torry Johnson under the net with 4:15 remaining. Johnson continued to ignite the offense, converting an And-1, cutting the deficit to four.

Miami was able to find offensive answers to the Deacs scoring, posting a 57 percent shooting clip in the second half. The Deacons continued to rally as Brown hit a floater at the 2:03 mark, cutting the Canes' lead to 74-69. Childress drew a foul driving to the basket with one minute on the clock and split the pair of free throws.

The Canes took a seven-point advantage with less than 30 seconds remaining. Ebuka Izundu fouled out, sending Mucius to the line, making it a two-possession game with just 22.6 to play. The Deacons were forced to foul on the other end of the court sending Miami to the line. A made free throw from Miami's Chris Lykes sealed the game for the Canes 79-71, knocking the Deacons out of the tournament early.
