Deacs in Fifth after Day One of ACC Championship

UWHARRIE POINT, N.C. – The Wake Forest men's golf team concluded the first day of the ACC Championship in fifth place as the first two rounds were played at Old North State Club. The Demon Deacons shot 10-under over the first 36 holes and are just three shots out of second place heading into the final round.
With the forecast of inclement weather on Friday, the tournament played the first and second rounds on Thursday. Wake Forest shot 2-over during the first round and were in 11th place after the opening 18 holes. The Deacs rebounded with a 12-under second round, the second-lowest round of the afternoon.
Georgia Tech leads the tournament at 30-under par through the first two rounds. Duke, Florida State and Virginia are tied for second at 13-under, followed by the Deacs at 10-under.
"It was a great bounce back from the guys in the second round," said head coach Jerry Haas. "We now have a day off to prepare to battle for a high finish on Saturday."
Alex Fitzpatrick led the Deacs on Thursday, shooting rounds of 72 and 67 to finish the day T-6th at 5-under. Lee Detmer also shot a second-round 67, tied for the lowest second round by a Deacon at an ACC Championship, to end the day at 3-under, T-14th.
Eugenio Chacarra is T-19th at 1-under after rounds of 73 and 70 on Thursday. Kengo Aoshima carded a pair of even par rounds of 72, while Cameron Young is 1-over after rounds of 73 and 72.
The final round of the tournament will be played Saturday at Old North State Club.
