AUGUSTA, Ga. – Wake Forest senior Jennifer Kupcho made golf history on Saturday by winning the inaugural Augusta National Women's Amateur. She posted a final round 67 to finish the historic tournament at 10-under par and became the first woman to win at Augusta National Golf Club.
Kupcho capped her final round with a magical six-hole stretch, playing legendary holes No. 13-18 in 5-under par to erase a two-shot deficit and post a four-shot win.
"I think, first of all, for me to hit the first tee shot of the tournament, just to open it up, it was a great honor to be able to do that," said Kupcho, the No. 1 ranked amateur in the world. "And then to be able to hit the last putt and to win, it's just amazing."
Playing with Arkansas senior Maria Fassi in the final pairing, Kupcho took a 1-shot lead into Saturday's play. Kupcho played the front-nine 1-under par, with a short birdie on the par-3 sixth, but Fassi's three-under front gave her a one-shot lead midway through the round.
Fassi's lead extended to two shots on No. 10 when Kupcho had a three-putt bogey, her only setback of the day. It was during a stretch of three holes when Kupcho was plagued by a migrane headache that impacted her vision.
After both players had a par on famed No. 11 and No. 12 of Amen Corner, Kupcho drew even on No. 13. She hit her approach shot on the par-5 to within five feet and sank the eagle putt to move to 7-under, tied with Fassi. It was the only eagle of the day on the course.
Fassi retook the lead with a long birdie putt on No. 14, but Kupcho answered with a birdie on No. 15. On the par-3 No. 16, Kupcho hit her shot to within five feet and made birdie, while Fassi three-putted for bogey to give Kupcho a two-shot lead.
Kupcho and Fassi both had a par on No. 17 and Kupcho went to the 18th tee with a two-stroke lead. Kupcho reached the green in two, while Fassi found the fairway bunker with her tee shot. After Fassi tapped in for bogey to finish the tournament at 6-under, Kupcho sank a long birdie putt to cap off her title and finish the tournament at 10-under.
Kupcho's 67 was the low round of the day at Augusta National as only eight of the 30 players shot under par. In addition to Kupcho and Fassi, only four other players finished the event under par.
Kupcho will return to action with the Demon Deacons April 18-20 with the ACC Championship at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro.
