MURRELLS INLET, S.C. – The Wake Forest men's golf team opened play at the NCAA Myrtle Beach Regional on Monday with the first round at TPC Myrtle Beach. The Demon Deacons shot 2-under during the opening round and are tied for third place after 18 holes.

The top five finishers at the 54-hole event will advance to the NCAA Championships, held May 24-29 in Fayetteville, Ark. Illinois is the first-round leader at 9-under, followed by Ohio State at 4-under. The Deacs are tied with Florida State for third place at 2-under, while Cal and UNLV are tied for fifth place at even par.

Wake Forest was led on Monday by Cameron Young, who shot a 2-under 70. Three Deacs, Eric Bae, Eugenio Chacarra and Lee Detmer, all shot even par 72 during the first round, while Alex Fitzpatrick shot a 2-over 74 to round out the lineup.

"The scores are bunched and we are in the middle of it," said head coach Jerry Haas. "We didn't get a practice round yesterday, so we learned some things today. There were some club selection choices that hurt us. We had a really nice finish, with four birdies on the last. Lee was 3-over at the turn and got it back to even. Cameron played a nice round, but had five or six holes he would like to have back, which all of us would. We have to play better the next two days. We have to be a little sharper and a little more focused, which we are capable of. They should have a good feel for this course now and be able to play a good round tomorrow."

The NCAA Myrtle Beach Regional continues Tuesday and concludes Wednesday at the TPC Myrtle Beach.
