RADFORD, Va. -- Wake Forest scored the final six runs of the game, but it wasn't enough to overcome an early 8-0 deficit in an 8-6 loss at Radford on Tuesday night.

The Highlanders (27-24) scored two runs in the first, three in the second, one in the third and two in the sixth to take a commanding lead.

The Demon Deacons (29-23) responded with four runs in the seventh and two in the eighth, but Graham Firoved entered and retired all five batters he faced to record his first save.

Bruce Steel went 2-for-3 with a walk, DJ Poteet was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Bobby Seymour went 2-for-5 with a double and RBI to lead the Deacs.

Cole McNamee was strong in relief, striking out two batters in a seven-pitch inning, while Bobby Hearn tossed a scoreless eighth inning to keep the Deacs in the game.

In the seventh, Poteet hit an RBI single, Jake Mueller added an RBI double, Chris Lanzilli hit an RBI groundout and Seymour notched an RBI single to cut the deficit to 8-4.

A trio of Radford errors helped the Deacs plate two more in the eighth, but Wake Forest left the potential tying run at the plate.

In a staff day for the Highlanders, Hunter Williams started and picked up the win by throwing 4.1 shutout frames, needing just 53 pitches in his outing. Andrew Szamski was 3-for-5 with a homer and three RBIs to lead Radford's offense.

The Deacs close out the regular season at Clemson from Thursday-Saturday. Thursday and Friday's games will air on ACC Network Extra, while Sunday's will be broadcast on RSN.
